Challenge
Glasgow Audio was recently approached by an Edinburgh based restaurant to survey, specify and install a new audio system. The client’s requirements were as follows. The system must:
1. Be easy to use.
2. Have a remote control.
3. Have centralised digital storage.
4. Be discreet and unobtrusive.
5. Be heard throughout the restaurant.
6. Be within budget.
Solution
Survey
In order to produce an accurate plan and subsequent quote for our client an initial site survey was conducted. A note of building materials used in the room was taken as well as laser measurements of the space. Next, any potential ceiling, wall or under floor access was assessed. Finally, access to mains electricity and potential electronics storage locations were discussed with the client, along with any questions or particulars they wished to confer.
Plan & Quote
Having gathered the information from the survey and knowing the system requirements we began producing plans, all with a Sonos audio system at its core. This choice was taken because it fulfilled system requirements 1, 2 and 3. The next major decision to take was that of speaker design and placement. The classic design for a restaurant audio system utilises wall mounted satellite speakers, this is where we began, with B&W. The optimum positions for speakers were calculated, followed by an estimated requirement for speaker cable. Knowing this information allowed us to specify a suitable amplifier, in this case a Rotel. From this an initial quote fulfilling all requirements was constructed. We wished to offer the client an alternative to the ‘classic’ satellite speaker solution; we decided the best solution for requirements 4 and 5 would be to use wall hanging ‘Artcoustic’ speakers. They are aesthetically pleasing with the option of bespoke front panel design, as well as providing great depth and dispersion of sound.
Result
The client decided which quote best suited their requirements and booked a day for the installation. This was completed by Matt & David within a day. The restaurant now has an easy to use, remote controlled audio system. The only elements in view of the public are the speakers. The rest of the system is hidden in a cupboard with easy access to all the electronics should it be required by the user.
